What’s the deal with 5GE?

If you’re on AT&T, you may have noticed a little 5GE icon appear on your phone, replacing 4G LTE. Does this mean your current phone is now on the 5G network? Not at all! Let us explain…

AT&T rolling out 5GE has been confusing and misleading to the public since January. Basically, they gave a slight upgrade to their 4G LTE network and rebranded it with the name “5GE.” Nothing about 5GE meets the 5G network standard; it is literally the same 4G LTE network you’ve been on for years.

5G Eventually…

AT&T says it stands for 5G Evolution, and they are working toward a 5G network every day. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have teamed up on this, publicly criticizing AT&T for deliberately misleading people to think they’re using 5G service when they’re not.

What should you do if 5GE appears on your phone status bar? Absolutely nothing. Both Verizon and AT&T have slowly started rolling out 5G networks in select areas, but it won’t be available nationwide for a while. And when it is, your current device will need an upgrade to take full advantage of the network. Learn more about Verizon’s 5G rollout here.
