On Tuesday, October 13, Apple launched its most-awaited smartphone yet: the iPhone 12. Pre-order begins today, Friday, October 16, at your local TCC, and the device will be available Friday, October 23.
If you think you’ve seen everything a smartphone can do, think again. Of course, upgrading your phone is always a big decision, but we’re pretty sure that this is the time to do it. Why? To answer that question, let’s take a look at the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (available for pre-order November 6).
iPhone 12: Where Beauty Meets Function
At first glance, you can see that there’s something different about the latest iPhone series. To begin, its OLED Super Retina XDR display stretches from edge to edge providing higher contrast and resolution than ever before over an even larger area. In fact, the display features 2x more pixels than the iPhone 11, and each pixel is individually controlled, creating a 2 million to 1 contrast ratio.
Smooth, flat edges form a unique uniform appearance in smooth, brilliant colors. But don’t be fooled by all elegance. Aerospace-grade aluminum frames (iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini) and surgical-grade stainless steel (iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max) plus Ceramic Shield glass make the iPhone 12 much more durable than its predecessors, which were some of the strongest in the industry already. With 4x better drop performance and spill and splash resistance (dust resistance too!), even the most accident-prone can have peace of mind when it comes to keeping their new iPhone intact.
(By the way, if you prefer something a little bit smaller, check out the iPhone 12 Mini with its 5.4″ OLED Super Retina XDR. The Mini fits all the power and features of the iPhone 12 into the palm of your hand.)
A Smartphone with Beauty and Braun and 5G
For the first time ever, every iPhone 12 is 5G enabled, with custom 5G antennas and more 5G bands than any other smartphone. In other words, it’ll work in 5G mode in even more places. And in case you missed it, Verizon’s 5G service is now available nationwide. With iPhone 12 and Verizon, you’ll see unprecedented performance with double peak download speeds of over 4 Gbps in ideal conditions and double the upload speeds of 200 Mbps per second. To quote Apple, “Hi, Speed.”
The iPhone 12 features a revolutionary A14 Bionic chip, which makes the CPU and GPU up to 50% faster than other comparable smartphones. The chip also features advancements in Machine Learning with a neural engine that’s 80% faster than comparable phones. It can perform 11 trillion operations per second. Speaking of AI, in order to conserve its already long-lasting battery, the iPhone also features Smart Data mode, which automatically switches service from 5G to LTE when 5G is not needed.

Now let’s talk about the cameras because we know how important creating the perfect shot is. From Apple.com: “Both the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras now have Night Mode – and it’s better than ever at capturing incredible low-light shots. The new Wide camera brings in 27 percent more light.” Computational photography – a part of machine learning – automatically processes the photo so that every single one will astound you with color and detail.
Night Mode is available for videos too and, for the first time ever, aspiring directors can create video using Dolby Vision from start to finish. Here’s a peek at what a video shot on an iPhone 12 Pro could look like.
But wait, there’s more.
If you watched the iPhone 12 launch video, you know this blog doesn’t cover everything that was announced. We haven’t gotten to MagSafe charging and accessories or how Apple is making major changes that will reduce their carbon footprint. For information on that and much more, watch the event video at Apple.com.
